Older people are increasingly the backbone of our economy

5.2.2010 Employers have been urged by the Business Minister Pat McFadden to recognise the skills and experience that older people can bring to the workplace. Mr McFadden speaking at a seminar hosted by the Department for Business on 3 February 2010 predicted that one third of Europe’s population will be over 60 years old by 2050 and warned that as a consequence we will have a population with different needs and skills. He said: “Older people are increasingly the backbone of our economy. We should be recognising this and looking for ways to meet their needs, and to make the most of what older workers can offer.
